Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be welcomed by your professional driver-guide who will provide a briefing about your upcoming gorilla trekking adventure. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a short city tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most organized capitals.

During the city tour, you may visit local craft markets, cultural centers, and selected landmarks that provide insight into Rwanda’s history, culture, and remarkable transformation. The city offers beautiful views, vibrant neighborhoods, and a glimpse into modern Rwanda.

After the tour, begin your scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda. The journey takes approximately two and a half hours and passes through Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, terraced farmlands, and picturesque villages. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the countryside and the towering Virunga Volcanoes that dominate the region.

Upon arrival near Volcanoes National Park, check in at your lodge and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding mountains. Spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing while preparing for the following day’s gorilla trekking experience.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience and Return to Kigali

Wake up early for breakfast before transferring to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi. Upon arrival, you will join other trekkers for registration and a briefing conducted by experienced park rangers. During the briefing, you will learn about gorilla trekking regulations, conservation efforts, and what to expect while in the forest.

After the briefing, you will be assigned to a specific gorilla family and accompanied by expert guides and trackers into the rainforest. The trek can last anywhere from one to several hours depending on the location of the gorilla family on that particular day. The terrain may include steep slopes, muddy trails, and dense vegetation, making the experience both exciting and rewarding.

As you hike through the forest, your guides will share fascinating information about the park’s wildlife, plants, birds, and conservation efforts. The anticipation builds as trackers communicate with the team ahead to locate the gorillas.

Once the gorilla family is found, you will have the privilege of spending one unforgettable hour observing these magnificent primates in their natural habitat. Watch as silverbacks monitor their families, mothers care for their infants, and playful juveniles interact with one another. This close encounter is often described as one of the most moving wildlife experiences in the world.

After your hour with the gorillas, begin the trek back to the starting point where you will receive a gorilla trekking certificate in recognition of your participation. Return to the lodge for lunch and refreshments before beginning the drive back to Kigali.

Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be transferred to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight or dropped off at your hotel, marking the end of your memorable Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Experience.
